Centre for Rural Development and Technology is one of renowned centre of the institute. It came into existence in 1979 with the sole aim of becoming outreach Centre for S&T for rural problem-solving and improving quality of life by generating more sources of livelihood. It has made significant contributions and developed rural friendly technologies in areas like alternate energy technology (biogas, smokeless chulha, etc.), sustainable agriculture, food processing, preservation and storage, bamboo based sustainable housing, mushroom cultivation, waste management, sanitation, etc. The centre is the national coordinator of two major programmes of the Govt. of India, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, that aims to utilize knowledge institutions of the country to help villages and Scientific Validation and Research on Panchgavya (SVAROP) which will help in reinstating the cattle based rural economy supported by critical scientific validation.
The Centre is supported by strong academic pillars of eminent faculties (11 Core, 4 Joint, 1 Emeritus 1 Honorary and 3 Adjunct), Post Docs (2 IIT and 4 others), Scientist and PhD researchers who are not only zealous for holistic rural development but also interested in developing relevant technologies and knowledge for strengthening villages. Our faculty members and research teams work in various areas for improving living conditions and generating livelihood through S&T interventions and traditional knowledge. The Centre has to its credit more than 300 high impact publications, reports and articles, 25 patents and 2 start-up. Centre provides open electives for all UG & PG students of the institute with the motivation behind the courses to provide the students with the exposure to rural technological systems and sustainability. The centre is well equipped with state of the art research equipments, computational facilities and resources both in terms of hardware and software. Since the establishment of the centre, significant contributions have been made to rural development by technology transfers, capacity building, regular interactions between rural population and academia.
